The other afternoon, I was walking past my neighbor’s porch when I noticed her standing over the trash bin, holding something in her hands. It was small, oddly shaped, and clearly not the kind of thing you casually toss out. Curiosity got the better of me, so I asked, “Are you throwing that away?”

She laughed and admitted she had no idea what it was or what it was used for—so out it went.
Naturally, I asked if I could have it instead. She shrugged, handed it over, and said, “If you can figure out what to do with it, be my guest.”
